West Middle School

Formerly known as Charles I. West Middle School, the Preparatory Institute, School for Academic Excellence at Charles I. West Hall, hereinafter known as West Prep, offers a small-scale educational environment for students.  During the 2005-06 school year, West Prep was reconstituted at all levels.  As a result of the process, energetic, engaging, and content-driven professionals were hired to improve student achievement for the 2006-07 school year and avoid a state takeover as mandated by No Child Left Behind.

West Prep serves a 95% minority population and 100% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch.  West Prep is committed to providing a positive, safe, and caring learning environment wherein each child is challenged to achieve maximum academic progress and social development.

After the reconstruction process, the band only had 15 students enrolled prior to the 2007 school year.  Since then, the band has grown to as many as 280 and has enjoyed performance opportunities throughout Las Vegas including U.S. Senators and City Officials, ‘Excellent’ ratings at band festivals, and 1st place trophies at the Las Vegas Martin Luther King, Jr., parades.

Students have also successfully auditioned for the Clark County School District Honor Band and Las Vegas Youth Symphony Orchestra–a first for the school in over a decade!!! In addition, the drumline was awarded 3rd place at the Wal-Mart “Notes to Grow” competition featuring middle school musical ensembles from across Southern Nevada, including Las Vegas.
